NGPG Bariatric and Metabolic Institute is home to the surgeon who performed the first Robotic Gastric Bypass procedure in Georgia.
Our level of experience and multidisciplinary approach offered at NGPG, help patients achieve better overall outcomes, sustaining long-term health benefit and weight loss. NGPG specializes in minimally invasive and robotic surgeries, which reduces pain and recovery time for our patients. We begin with patient education and pre-operative evaluation in order to recommend the best treatment plan for each patient.
Advantages of Gastric Bypass
Gastric bypass is the most frequently performed bariatric procedure, therefore it has been researched and studied the most over the years. The procedure has also gone through many changes for improvements in efficiency and safety.
The gastric bypass procedure:
- Typically has higher weight loss results, excess weight loss can be as high as 60-80%.
- Weight loss appears to occur faster.
- There is a higher improvement and resolution rate for co-morbidities.
How is a Robotic Gastric Bypass Performed?
Gastric bypass surgery is traditionally performed laparoscopically but uses the da Vinci Surgical System to assist in the completion of the most critical part of the surgery. More and more studies are now showing that, not only in bariatrics but also in other surgical specialties, complication rates are decreased in the robotic-assisted approach when compared to the standard laparoscopic approaches.
During this operation most of the stomach is reduced, or restricted, to a small gastric pouch to decrease the amount of food the stomach can physically hold. The small intestine is then reconfigured so food can bypass most of the stomach and part of the small intestine. This reduces the number of calories ingested and absorbed.
The most important step of the Gastric Bypass procedure is creating the communication between the stomach and small bowel which is commonly completed by stapling or hand sewing the two together. The sewing technique has reported the best results and least complications to date. The da Vinci robot provides surgeons a high definition view of the surgical area, allowing them to execute hand sewing with enhanced precision and dexterity.
