Restoring hope & health.
Unfortunately, many women experience pain, discomfort or urinary incontinence for years without a diagnosis or solution. At Northeast Georgia Physicians Group Urogynecology, our specialized providers have unique experience diagnosing and treating in pelvic pain, abnormal bleeding, and pelvic floor issues, like prolapse or incontinence.
About NGPG Urogynecology
Women face unique health challenges at every age and stage of life, including pelvic health issues that can lead to abnormal bleeding, pain, discomfort, and urinary or fecal incontinence. The fellowship-trained doctors at NGPG Urogynecology specialize in providing comprehensive care related to pelvic health.
Our urogynecologists have years of expertise and training in urogynecology—a specialty that combines aspects of gynecology and urology. This training equips them to offer a variety of treatment options for conditions affecting the female pelvic floor. From diagnosis and management to minimally-invasive surgery or pelvic reconstruction, our program offers comprehensive options to improve your quality of life.
What we treat
NGPG Urogynecology provides diagnosis and treatment for a wide range of pelvic health conditions, including:
- Endometriosis, which causes uterine tissue to grow outside the uterus
- Genitourinary fistula, which is an abnormal opening between the vagina, urethra, bladder, and ureter
- Interstitial cystitis, which is a bladder condition causing urinary symptoms that come and go
- Pelvic organ prolapse, which causes one or more pelvic organs to drop from their normal position
- Rectovaginal fistula, which is an abnormal opening between the rectum and vagina
- Urinary incontinence, which is a lack of control over the bladder
- Uterine bleeding
- Uterine fibroids, which are benign growths that develop in the uterus
- Vaginal/labial tears, scars, or misshapen anatomy, which can be congenital or occur during childbirth or trauma
These conditions cause many different symptoms that can range from uncomfortable to debilitating, such as pelvic pressure and pain, urinary leakage, and pain during intercourse. Effective treatment can help restore quality of life.
What we do
NGPG Urogynecology is committed to providing specialized treatment options for women of any age who are experiencing a pelvic health disorder. Treatment for a pelvic health issue may include:
- Acessa, a radiofrequency treatment to shrink uterine fibroids
- Bladder diary, which logs fluid intake and urination
- Bladder training, which aims to increase the amount of time between urinating and the amount of fluid the bladder can hold
- Botox, which is used to treat an overactive bladder
- Cystoscopy, which is used to examine the lining of the bladder
- Hysterectomy, which is a surgery to remove the uterus
- Laparoscopic resection, which is used to remove endometriosis growth on pelvic organs
- Pelvic floor exercises and therapy, which help strengthen pelvic floor muscles
- Sacral neuromodulation, which alters the sacral nerves controlling the bladder and muscles used in urination
- Sling procedures, which use tissue or synthetic material to support the urethra and bladder neck
- Vaginal pessary, which is a soft device inserted in the vagina to support areas affected by prolapse
In many cases, multiple treatment options, including medications, may be used to help manage and treat a pelvic floor disorder.
Frequently asked questions
A urogynecologist is a physician with specialty training in both urology and gynecology. These providers have considerable expertise in treating female pelvic floor disorders, including bladder control issues and pelvic organ prolapse. Having knowledge related to both the women’s reproductive system and the urinary system allows urogynecologists to effectively diagnose and treat conditions that affect the pelvis.
One provider isn’t necessarily “better” than another, but they do work differently. Urologists have specialized training in the urinary system. Gynecologists have specialized training in the female reproductive system and can treat conditions of the female urinary system.
Urogynecologists, on the other hand, encompass both. A relatively new specialty, first recognized in 2011, urogynecology shines a light on the unique and complex nature of the female pelvis. The pelvic floor is made up of muscles and connective tissues that support both the reproductive system and the urinary system. An NGPG urogynecologist has significant training related to the pelvic floor in its entirety.
If you’re experiencing symptoms related to your pelvic floor, let your OB/GYN or another women’s health provider know. Your provider can offer treatment for acute problems, such as urinary tract infections, that cause pelvic pain and other symptoms.
If your symptoms linger, though, or you’re experiencing severe symptoms related to your pelvic floor, ask your provider about a referral to NGPG Urogynecology. Pelvic floor disorders can affect women of all ages, so many women can benefit from seeing a urogynecologist.
Symptoms that may be related to a pelvic health issue include:
- Difficulty getting to the bathroom in time
- Dribbling or leaking urine or fecal matter
- Frequent urinary urges
- Fullness or pressure in the vagina or pelvis
Women with a pelvic floor disorder may also have the sensation that something is falling out of the vagina.
Your experience will vary somewhat depending on the symptoms you’re experiencing and the type of condition you may have. At your appointment, have an open and honest conversation with your provider about the symptoms you’re experiencing and how they’re affecting your daily life.
During this time, you can also share details about your personal and family medical history with your urogynecologist, including information about past pregnancies and any traumas you have experienced.
After this, the provider will conduct a pelvic exam, taking a close look at the organs, muscles, and tissues in the pelvic floor and how they’re functioning. Additional tests, including blood work or imaging scans, may also be used to help determine a diagnosis.
