Vaginal discharge isn’t usually a topic of conversation, but it’s something every woman experiences. While it’s normal to have discharge, changes in that discharge can be a red flag for an infection or another health issue.
It’s important to know what’s normal for you—and to seek medical attention when vaginal discharge seems outside that norm.

What is vaginal discharge?
Vaginal discharge usually isn’t a symptom of anything. In fact, it’s entirely normal to have discharge on a regular or even daily basis. Vaginal discharge can be a clear, white, or off-white fluid. This fluid is produced by the uterus, cervix, and vagina, and it’s made up of cells and bacteria.
Discharge serves a key purpose, helping to clean and lubricate the vagina and keep infections away. Changes in the color, texture, smell, or amount of vaginal discharge, however, can be an indication of infection or another problem.
What causes vaginal discharge?
Normal vaginal discharge is produced by the female reproductive system and used to keep the vagina clean and free of infections. Discharge that’s notably different from your norm, on the other hand, can be caused by infections, inflammation, or other factors disrupting the vagina’s bacterial balance.
A number of factors and medical conditions can cause changes in vaginal discharge, including:
- Bacterial vaginosis
- Chemicals found in products coming in contact with the vagina or vulva
- Forgotten tampons or foreign bodies in the vagina
- Low estrogen levels
- Menopause
- Sexually transmitted infections (STIs)
- Vaginal yeast infection
Less commonly, certain skin conditions and gynecological cancers can also cause unusual vaginal discharge.
When should I seek care for vaginal discharge?
Normal vaginal discharge keeps your body healthy and clear of infection. Any time you experience changes in vaginal discharge, though, it’s important to check in with a medical provider.
