Sinusitis

You’ve probably had sinusitis at one time or another. It’s simply another name for a sinus infection, a medical issue that many people seem to have at least once every year.

Sinusitis is actually a more accurate name, since the pesky inflammation it can cause isn’t always the result of an infection. Seeing a medical provider when you’re experiencing symptoms of sinusitis can help determine the underlying cause of your discomfort and how to find relief.

What is sinusitis?

Sinusitis, also called rhinosinusitis, is an inflammation of the sinuses, which are the hollow spaces in the bones around the nose. The sinuses are responsible for producing mucus. When the nose becomes swollen, it can block your sinuses and cause a number of uncomfortable symptoms.

There are several types of sinusitis, differing in how long they last and how frequently they occur. Acute sinusitis is most common and may last for up to a month. Subacute sinusitis can last for up to three months, while chronic sinusitis persists for longer, lasting for months or even years.

When sinusitis goes away and then returns frequently, often several times within a year, it’s called recurrent sinusitis.

What are the symptoms of sinusitis?

Acute sinusitis often starts as a common cold, and the symptoms of sinusitis are similar to a cold. Symptoms may include:

  • Bad breath
  • Cough
  • Ear fullness
  • Facial pain or pressure
  • Fatigue
  • Headache
  • Head congestion
  • Postnasal drip
  • Runny or stuffy nose
  • Thick, yellowish-green nasal discharge

In some cases, sinusitis can also cause discomfort that feels like a toothache.

What causes sinusitis?

Ever had a cold that turned into a sinus infection? Acute sinusitis often begins that way. While anyone can develop sinusitis, the condition is more common for certain people.

Your risk of developing sinusitis may be higher if you have:

  • Abnormal sinus structure
  • Allergies
  • Asthma
  • Cystic fibrosis
  • Large adenoids
  • Nasal polyps
  • Weakened immune system

Children who are frequently exposed to illnesses in a daycare or school setting may also be at a higher risk of developing sinusitis.

When should I seek care for sinusitis?

Have a cold that just won’t seem to go away? Lingering cold-like symptoms may be a sign of sinusitis. Stop by NGPG Urgent Care to visit with a medical provider if you’ve been experiencing symptoms for longer than a week.

We can verify whether your symptoms are caused by sinusitis and determine whether you could benefit from an antibiotic. If your infection doesn’t seem to be bacterial, we can recommend other treatment options to help you find relief.
